ASEAN MADE EASY: Bringing Children Into the ASEAN Community
Students from all fields participate in a student community services initiative at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The 83rd group batch 8 used the opportunity to educate the children of the As Shalaam Shobuur orphanage about the ASEAN regional organization.
This group acquired experience studying about the dynamics of ASEAN, similar to what they learned in college. This brought the group of 83 to continue it with a smaller level, namely children aged 12–16 years.
The group of 83 batch 8 gave material to the participants in terms of the founding fathers of ASEAN, the reasons for the establishment of ASEAN, the long process of establishing ASEAN, ASEAN member countries, as well as the uniqueness of each ASEAN country.
The several activities gave them new insight that we are all citizens of ASEAN. In addition, after the presentation session, the children tend to be very curious about the characteristics of each country.
This learning technique is carried out in 2 ways. The presenter explains in general language. The next session, there was a video screening session explaining about each ASEAN country, what makes these countries different and become so south east asian-centrist. Moreover, these children are divided into groups based on the country obtained. After all, the childrens are going to do a presentation session regarding what they have learned and explain to their friends about the uniqueness of each country they get.
The response of these children was unexpected and very active. Their curiosity is extraordinary. This program certainly has an impact on their awareness regarding the vastness of the world and our coexistence, mutual cooperation and always in harmony among citizens.
